What is Angelique wood, and why is machining it such a big deal? Excelsior Owner & Founder Ron Sauer tells all in our latest WoodTube video. We share the history behind the wood and how we’re able to process this two-foot-long, seven-thousand-pound wood here at our factory in Kingston, New York.
Angelique wood, also known as Basralocus, is one of the hardest and most durable woods in the world. It was once used to build naval ships and was one of the prominent species used throughout Europe in various water conditions. It is highly resistant to rot, decay, and insect damage. The wood is highly sought after for its durable nature and unique character, making it an excellent choice for outdoor applications like decking, siding, and furniture.
We were able to acquire Angelique timbers through Nova Wood, and when it was delivered to us from Germany, it weighed nearly seven thousand pounds per piece. Milling this type of wood presented many challenges. Even using a chainsaw would dull the blade after just a few cuts and even the most durable bandsaw blades could only handle around five inches of cutting before becoming dull.
However, with our industrial tooling background, we were able to find a solution. We discovered certain metals and elements could help cut the wood more efficiently, making us a go-to source for working with Angelique wood.
Angelique wood is a rare and valuable material that is prized for its unique personality and unparalleled durability. Despite the challenges of machining this hand-hewn wood, it remains in high demand because of its beauty and longevity. Because of our innovative solutions, it's possible to work with Angelique wood in a way that honors its unique qualities and creates beautiful and lasting pieces that will be treasured for generations to come.
