Rainscreen siding clips over wood slabs

Natural wood siding can change based on weather conditions. The siding may expand or contract due to seasonal changes in humidity, which can cause challenges when it comes to constructing durable siding. Wood is always seeking equilibrium. That’s why we offer a solution that allows the wood to expand and contract naturally—rainscreen clips.

What is a rainscreen clip?

Nova’s ExoClad Rainscreen QuickClip is an innovative product designed to enhance the durability and performance of exterior wall cladding systems. This system provides a reliable solution for creating a ventilated rain-screen assembly, which offers numerous benefits for both residential and commercial construction projects. Excelsior is one of the rare manufacturers licensed to run this profile.

The ExoClad Rainscreen QuickClip is specifically engineered to facilitate the ease of installation of wood siding—especially exotic woods. These clips are strategically placed on the building's framework, allowing for the creation of a gap between the cladding and the underlying wall, all while keeping the clip completely concealed. The clip will expand or contract along with the wood siding.

The primary purpose of this ventilated gap is to promote proper airflow and moisture management. By incorporating the ExoClad Rainscreen QuickClip system, builders can effectively manage the infiltration of water, reduce the risk of condensation, and enhance the overall performance and longevity of the cladding.

How to install rainscreen clips

One of the notable advantages of the ExoClad Rainscreen QuickClip system is its user-friendly design. The clips are easy to install, requiring minimal effort and time during construction. Here are our recommended steps for installation.

1. Preparation: Follow the manufacturer's directions when installing house wrap over plywood sheathing to avoid moisture penetration. Mark a horizontal, level line with chalk where the base of the Rainscreen siding will align. This is the starting point. Your initial board should ideally be at least 6" off the ground. Mark the location of your studs with a chalk line to make installation easier.

2. Secure Starter Clips: Install your first set of clips on your baseline by screwing them into the stud through the Vapor Barrier. If the bottom of the clip is not supporting anything, you might want to cut it (an angle grinder will do). Place every starter clip in line with the studs you indicated. Ensure that the clips are positioned on the level of the studs and spaced uniformly. For the initial course of clips, you could require two screws per clip.

3. Place Cor-A-Vent: To fill the area between the clips, cut strips of Cor-A-Vent and screw them into the vapor barrier/sheathing horizontally. For ventilation and insect control, the Cor-A-Vent should run along the baseline behind your siding.

4. Fill in the Rest: Using a level, install the first Rainscreen siding board on the top of your starter clips.

See Nova’s installation guide for more detailed instructions.

With the ExoClad Rainscreen QuickClip system, you can enjoy the beauty and warmth of wood siding without worrying about moisture-related issues. Say goodbye to concerns about unsightly gaps or warping caused by moisture-induced expansion. Embrace the peace of mind that comes with a reliable solution that keeps your wood siding in optimal condition, regardless of environmental factors.
